Jack and Jill

Her long black hair shines as she runs up the hill. "Jill, Wait for me! How do you have so much energy?" I gasped as I stopped to catch my breath. Her laughter fills the warm air and it feels like my heart skips a beat.

"Come on, or we're going to miss it!" She teases. Reluctantly I run to catch up to her as she reaches the old walnut tree that sits up on King's Hill. We sat side by side, watching the sun sinking lower and lower. "Jack?" She pauses as she lights her joint, "Will you make me a promise?

"What's that?" She passes me the joint and I hold it for a second before taking a long draw.

"Promise me that we'll never leave each other." I start coughing and she chuckles. "I mean it, Promise me that by the time we're our parent's age we'll marry each other. I don't want anyone else." She gets quieter as she finishes the sentence. By now, it's gotten dark. And I realize she can't see me nodding.

"I promise, Jill. We'll get married. I'll get you a ring and everything." I can't help but smile as I say it.

I wonder if she figured out that I like her. Does she finally know that I've loved her since the first grade when I transferred to Lion Academy? "We should head back, it's getting really dark and you know how this shit makes us paranoid" I teased to hide my anxiety.

The next day at school, Jill didn't show up to school. I texted her but she didn't respond. Weird, she always has her phone. At lunch, I decide to ditch the rest of school and walk to her house. I stop at the end of her walkway, and notice her dad's car isn't in the carpark. She never leaves her curtains open. I walk up to the door and notice a letter taped to the door. Eviction Notice: Please vacate the property as of... "Today.." I whispered.
